>THUNDER CATS, ASSEMBLE!,
That’s Atchoum the cat! He has hypertrichosis.
I feel bad for the little fella, having to be declawed is awful, but his nails must have been really bad for it to be nessecary.
I guess cat toes are too small for the removal of the nail matrix? Do cats even have nail matrixes?
Not sure... but I know that declawing removes to the first knuckle. It’s the only way to prevent the nail from growing back.
Looking at a diagram, why can't they just shave away the claw part of the bone? That way the cat is still able to use the first knuckle. Do they have really good bone regeneration or something??? There's gotta be some part in the claw where it grows from and can be removed, it would be weird if it could just spontaneously generate from bone.
I’m very against declawing but one of our rescue cats may need 2-3 of his nails declawed :( the knuckle part is broken (something definitely happened to his little foot when he was out and about trying to survive on his own) and his nail can’t retract properly, and the nail grows and hooks around back into the pad of his toe, which causes a bloody mess and affects his ability to walk. When I try to trim the nail to prevent it from growing like this, you can tell it causes him a LOT of pain because the toes in general are so messed up. Poor baby :(
It's not awful. How many people have you met who are missing a part or whole finger. It's not a big deal. It maybe should be avoided if it's not necessary, but it's dumb how every animal surgery is suddenly considered hypercruel.
Every step is painful when you're declawed
Uh, no. Maybe if it's totally botched.
Sorry, didn’t realise you were a declawed cat.
[The Humane Society](https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/declawing-cats-far-worse-manicure) and the [SPCA](https://spca.bc.ca/news/is-declawing-cats-ok/) can help give you the info you need to better understand declawing. It is an unnecessary cosmetic procedure which is rarely performed 100% correctly and which has an incredibly high chance of causing chronic pain and behavioral issues in cats. It remains a last resort option for some medical issues like for cats who can’t retract their claws and get stuck/strained, but it should never be considered to keep a cat from scratching furniture. Even [the CDC’s](https://www.cdc.gov/bartonella/cat-scratch/index.html) info page on cat scratch fever does not recommend declawing as a way to protect humans against cat scratch related issues.
Yeah, you are a human and can compare some handicaps with your intelligence. Cats are specialized animals and hardly driven by instinct, they want to skratch things in their territory to mark it and care for their claws. Also the claws of a cat are it's weapon against everything, they will feel insecure if they are missing and many cats develop mental disorder from declawing.
Well, we didn't talk about the cats that develop chronical pain with every step they do. This practice is banned in whole Europe for decades.
How would you like walking barefoot directly on your severed toe knuckles? Cats don't walk on their heels. It adjust their step and causes pain. How would you like ALL of your fingers were severed down to useless nubs against your will so that you could never grab anything again? Because that's what declawing does. Imagine having to walk across gravel on your bare raw toe knuckles every time you had to take a piss. Or not being able to walk, run, jump or climb properly ever again.
Declawing is cruel. Full stop. Reputable vets refuse to do it nowadays unless there is a serious medical reason. And I think vets know better than you do.
Let’s remove your first knuckles across both hands and see how you enjoy life after that.
How many years have you been accustomed to having full digits?
Dude they're cats.
They’re sentient beings that deserve compassion and empathy.
I maintain that you wouldn’t like it if someone sliced your fingertips off-surgically or not.
I love him. He's from Québec.
*Atchoum* is an onomatopoeia for sneezing in Canadian French.
Thank you for clarifying that.
