Noa Lang is a fantastic young player but the Bielsa news is what made this tweet for me 🙌

TorontoMapleLeeds

If we are after another winger, makes you think we must be offloading someone.

xSmxthy

I’d assume it’s backup for Harrison and Poveda will go out on loan or Helder will be sold

robgalloway

I keep getting downvoted every time I post that we’ll be in for a LB and a winger ahead of a CM. Bielsa likes wingers and you need more than Harrison and Raphinia. Poveda isn’t quite ready yet and Costa is nowhere near the level required for an experienced 27 year old winger.

FullExamination7256

If we're signing all three positions, which we are trying to, how would anyone ever know the priority if there even is one. They'll just sign all three as quickly as they can get the appropriate players.

robgalloway

Well LB is deffo a priority, we could definitely do with another winger, and CM we’ve plenty of players who can do a job there over the next 12 months, Klich, Dallas, Phillips, Rodrigo, Roberts, and Shackleton. So I’d say priority goes 1. LB 2. Winger 3. CM

orangelivesmatter00

LB is obviously 1st priority by a mile. Alioski is disastrously bad overall. In our own half anyway. He works hard, is decent going forward and has moments of great quality in attack. After that I think we're going to improve wherever we can, depending on who we can get, for CM/10/wing. You're right that wings are very important under Bielsa as we that's where we attack most. And Costa isn't good enough. I think Poveda has shown a lot in the limited time he's had, he's been very good with the ball but isn't very good without it. Doesn't have the athleticism or work rate to press like any of the other 3 do.

robgalloway

Alioski isn’t disastrously bad at all … he’s not a natural LB and considering that he’s had a fantastic first season in the Premier League.

orangelivesmatter00

I'm evaluating him as a left back. He's absolutely disastrously bad. You can count on one hand the number of good games he had defensively. He constantly gives the ball away, constantly makes bad fouls (gave two penalties away alone which were the 1st goal in games, which led to losses). Against Fulham away he was literally gifting them corners. He's been subbed early numerous times. Like I said, he's decent in the opposition half, and he provides natural width (unlike Dallas, who comes in-field). But in our half he's terrible. He tries his best and is energetic but it's easily our weakest spot in the first 11.

robgalloway

I don’t think anyone will disagree that we need a natural left back but to say Alioski has had a disastrously bad season … even defensively when he isn’t even a natural LB is a little bit of an extreme opinion.

DEUK_96

Alioski started his career at LB and has played there more than anywhere else, so I think you can say he is a natural LB tbf. Definitely isn't disastrously bad at defending though, we wouldn't have been promoted or finished 9th otherwise.

orangelivesmatter00

I didn't say he's had a disastrously bad season. I said he's disastrously bad in our half of the pitch. A complete liability. Most of his contributions are giving the ball away or making a foul. I know people like him as a character, I do too, but it is what it is.

Snowstorm97

Alioski is our weakest link, but how many times did people exploit that to their advantage? He's put some good performances in, of course he has his moments of madness but he's fine imo. I'd prefer him to stay but we need to get an actual left back in as well

orangelivesmatter00

>but how many times did people exploit that to their advantage? Often. People are forgetting because he played well the last 4 games. Particularly against Spurs. He got subbed off 10 times, 5 times at or just after half time. The first half against Brighton was the worst performance from any player all season. I'm fine if he stays as a squad player but he'll very likely barely play. And I hope he doesn't get minutes on the wing ahead of Poveda. And older players usually don't like it when they don't play, especially with the training they have to do under Bielsa. That was clearly the case with Pablo this season.

Snowstorm97

He was shit against Brighton. There's no 2 ways about that. But he bounced back and put in some good performances, like you said. I'm not saying he's a world beater, but as a squad player he's completely fine. He's never gonna set the league on fire but spare the occasional howler, he's been good for us this year

TorontoMapleLeeds

Agree with all this. I’ve been impressed with Alioski at left back but you’d want a better addition there if this squad is to progress. On the left side he’s a fine rotation option.

Ashamed_Nerve

Poveda shouldn't be a Leeds player next year for me. I'd rather have Costa, he's that poor. I don't care how many times he beats his man in 15 seconds he has created legitimately nothing this season. Not a decent chance, not forced a decent save. Worst type of player going for me. Dribbly and pointless

orangelivesmatter00

You're objectively wrong. He has the one of the highest xA/90 in the league: https://understat.com/league/EPL Scroll down and arrange by XA90. 0.35 per game. Bear in mind he's had 0 league starts. Creating a clear cut chance for Roberts vs Liverpool: https://youtu.be/sgFFmOZ1Daw?t=134 Creating a clear cut chance for Costa vs Everton after some great skill: https://youtu.be/TEp7UkNAmAk?t=157 And against Man City at home he came on at half time (or just after) and was superb and turned the game around, I suggest rewatching that match, you can find it here: https://footballia.net/players/marcelo-alberto-bielsa?coach_page=6&mode=coach&page=4 In his only start, against Crawley, he was the only player who did anything in the first half. He tends to come on when we're facing a parked bus as well, meaning it's even harder to create anything. He could also have had a penalty against Chelsea if he'd gone down, if you remember. He's just turned 21. Costa won't be happy being 4th choice winger. I think Bielsa prefers to have young players filling those fringe roles. Because they don't complain, for one. Look at how frustrated Pablo has been this season. Costa also has some resale value.

Ashamed_Nerve

Let's not forget all the times he's done nothing then no? Brighton, Sheffield, Chelsea? Literally any other game you haven't mentioned. I'm not here to recite stats and go through game for game I'm happy to see he has created things - good. He's still miles off. He still loses the ball far too much and the City game was primarily down to Rodrigo. Poveda got free runs at Mendy and embarrassed him, great to see. But there was still no end product from him, and the more you see of him you realise City was about the best of what he can offer. He's trouble for anybody running at him 1v1 because he's tricky and agile but he's painfully slow, can't cross, doesn't know when to pass or where to pass unless his dribbling has created an unmissable opening. Nobody wants to sell anybody and its baffling. Costa has at least had moments in games, scored goals. Assisted. Sure he's started more but Poveda hasn't done anything, and he gets completely bullied off the ball. He gets ignored and swatted away like a fly. The league is full of physical beasts and Poveda falls short in every way. More Marko Marin than Bernardo Silva

orangelivesmatter00

>Let's not forget all the times he's done nothing then no? Brighton, Sheffield, Chelsea? Literally any other game you haven't mentioned. Mate, he's played about 322 minutes. How can he have done nothing when he has one of the highest xA/90 in the league? lol. Against Chelsea he could have won a pen and, IIRC, played out of position on the left. How many bad games have Harrison and Costa had? Even against Brighton he played better than Harrison and looked likelier than anyone to create something. And he came on when they were winning and parking the bus. Yeah mate, and what did Costa do in the City game? He played the whole game and did nothing but waste opportunities. What did Harrison do in the Chelsea and Brighton games? Lost the ball, hit 30 crosses to Dunk's head. We can't evaluate Poveda unless he has a run of starts like Roberts and Struijk have. Look at how those 2 have improved having that benefit. He's not slow. He's quick over a short distance. He doesn't have the breakaway pace or running power our other wingers have. Oh, and here's him crossing for Bamford to head onto the post against Arsenal: https://youtu.be/VI7fxXQdeOU?t=153 That's 3 assists he could/should have had in 320 or so minutes (3 and a half games). >Costa has at least had moments in games, scored goals. Assisted. Sure he's started more but Poveda hasn't done anything, and he gets completely bullied off the ball. Costa has almost 4 times as many minutes as Poveda. Costa gets bullied off the ball all the time. He's not direct enough, he rarely stands up his man and actually runs at him. His finishing has been very good this season. He obviously has quality, his first touch is usually very good, but he lacks dynamism. And he's not going to get any better (unlike Poveda), he's only going to get worse, as a winger, at 27. As I said in another comment. I see Bielsa's squad as ~18 core players with 3-4 young players on the fringe to supplement. Who have potential to be core players, who won't complain about not playing and/or can be sold on for decent money in 2-3 years if they don't make the grade. These, for me, would be Shackleton, Roberts and Poveda. I'd also promote Drameh and have him in that group as well. As he looks a standout in the U23s and our right backs are both 30 next season. Shackleton looks better in midfield.

Ashamed_Nerve

I don't see it, I see a kid on a playground trying to take everybody on until he gets stopped. For me they're the worst sort of players and I've no time for them. He's never going to start for us, you have to be insanely technically gifted to play in this league when you're blessed with his physical stats. He gets memed on by the rest of the squad for being the slowest player in the team. So, with his obvious drawbacks for me keeping Costa is the better option as a 4th choice assuming we sign another winger. It won't be easy selling Costa, none of the championship teams have any money and a prem team won't touch him. Maybe he goes to Portugal but who would actually pay for him? With that in mind keep the higher quality player and send Poveda out whether that's loan or transfer.

lewisofleeds

I think he needs a loan to the championship for a year where he can start week in week out and see how it goes from there. If it doesn't work out there don't think it ever will at Leeds.

Forsaken_Candidate_4

Wasn’t he only on loan to club Brugge? Plays for Ajax

xSmxthy

He just finished a loan spell at Brugge, they have an obligation to buy him for 5.4m, but they (Brugge) want to sell him for more as they can probably get triple the amount they pay for him, within a month

Forsaken_Candidate_4

Fuck didn’t know that, thanks for the knowledge

allenout

Didn't he have an Anti-Semitic rant after a game?

Juggler045

In my opinion (as a Dutchman), this situation has been taken out of context. Noa Lang sang a chant about their rivals Anderlecht, who are nicknamed 'Yids' (similar to Tottenham, for instance). From my point of view, if you replaced the word 'yid' with any other football team's nickname, it would not have been offensive. The nickname is what causes the 'misunderstanding'. It was not a clever move and it would have been better had he avoided this awkward situation by not singing in the first place, but it really seems he did not have any ill intentions.

TorontoMapleLeeds

Yeah he did. Anderlecht have Jewish roots in their founding and Brugge as their rivals have some anti Semitic chants. A bit like Tottenham and Arsenal. I don’t think it’s good at all but it’s more rival abuse then hatred of jews, in my opinion. I imagine Lang is just ignorant then actually anti Semitic (no excuses). Singing along without caring. Kind of ironic considering he came from Ajax, another club with its history tied to Jewish founding. Yes, people would use it to bash us, nothing new.

Ashamed_Nerve

Fuck knows why you're getting down voted here. He definitely did

J19E19B

He doesn't deny it either, if we were to sign him it would be a media shitstorm and not a good look for the club especially after the Kiko saga

orangelivesmatter00

He sung along with a chant by Brugge fans aimed at Anderlecht fans: "I'd rather die than be a Sporting Jew". It will be funny to see al the devout anti-racists ignore this because he's a good player. Personally I don't care. I don't care what any player says off the pitch.

TorontoMapleLeeds

Weird take.

kindestcut

Check out his profile. Not so weird.

TorontoMapleLeeds

Wow, yikes.

MLiciniusCrassus

How is Romano Tier 1 but Smyth and Popey T2?

Getittogether19

Romano is 100000x better connected than Leeds-based journos (excellent though they are). There's a lot of fakers on Twitter but he def isn't one of them.

MLiciniusCrassus

More connected sure, but I don't expect either of them to be tweeting stuff that isn't accurate. It's the same as Phil Hay, yet he's T1 and the others aren't.

xSmxthy

Romano is tier 2 here mate

MLiciniusCrassus

Oh, was definitely T1 on my screen when I posted.... odd

WhoIsStealingMyUser

Yeah it's still saying that for me too

MLiciniusCrassus

u/xSmxthy Romano's back to T1 on my screen again too

Chimp-eh

He’s shit tier

Bujakaa92

Copy paste tier

orangelivesmatter00

He's supposedly good at assessing sources.

Supplanter101

Marcelo Bielsa is expected to sign his new contract with Leeds soon Also, Leeds are interested in signing Noa Lang from Club Brugge - the Belgian club will try to keep him offering a new contract but Leeds want to open talks. There fixed it!

cpmb82

When I'm talking about due dates on a project "soon" is a good word as its fairly positive but also fairly vague, when we're talking about Marcelo signing a contract I'd prefer a more definitive date (although not worried) Know nothing about Lang but trust in Orta and the club process if true. Still want a natural LB before next season tho please!

Davidorestad

Seen a few videos of him against poor Belgian teams .. nothing special about him.. he’d be ok in a championship team but not premier league

VidiBitz

So you didn't see him against Lazio and Zenit in the UCL?

Davidorestad

Obviously not .. he got one of the three goals and an assist .. can’t see he made much impact against Dortmund who would do well in PL .. let’s see if he moves to West Yorkshire and proves me wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

VidiBitz

Well cuz Dortmund are 3x better as a team it's unfair Ur a clear stat merchant, basing performances off goals and assists... 🤦‍♂️ Even the first game vs Zenit he had a major impact for the winning goal as a sub, but u wouldn't know cuz it's not a goal or assist so must've surely been a bad performance right? My point is he can handle a higher level than the Pro League. Even Leeds would get battered by Dortmund let's be honest lol

Davidorestad

Ok . I Can see you are immensely knowledgeable about this player and the games he’s played in . I’m sure too that all players in a team have some part in every goal scored and conceded and not just the goal scorer , assister or goal keeper . Stats expert no ! Just a gut reaction on seeing his videos that he’s nothing special . But let’s see .I’m sure he has a great future wherever he plays
